The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

dir. Robert Wise

The alien spaceship's landing – The Ellipse, Washington, DC

The boarding house where Klaatu (Michael Rennie) stays under the name of Mr. Carpenter – Still searching for this location but it’s probably a studio backlot.

Klaatu and Bobby (Billy Gray) go to Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, where Bobby's father is buried. The white building in the establishing shot is the Old Administration Building. This was originally the site of Arlington House's stables, built between 1803 and 1818. In 1932, the stables were converted into an administration building. A new administration building was constructed in 1975, and the sign "Arlington National Cemetery" was taken down.

Klaatu and Bobby visit the Lincoln Memorial, Lincoln Memorial Circle SW, Washington, DC

Klaatu and Bobby go to Professor Barnhardt's house - 1609 16th Street, NW, Washington, DC

The troops are put on high alert – Ronald Reagan National Airport, Washington, DC

  1. Hi! Does the frequency of your posting depend on specific things or you work on blog articles when you have a special mood or you create when you have time? Can't wait to hear from you.

    1. I have a full-time job so I work on this blog mostly on weekends (I wish it was just up to my mood and inspiration.) It's also a matter of having pictures ready. I have several posts planned but waiting for pictures to be taken. Some posts are delayed because key locations are unidentified. I don't get that much feedback on this blog, so your comment is appreciated.

  2. I have been to the Harvard Street address where the boarding house is supposed to be, and that block has an apartment complex on it and looks nothing like the movie scenes.

  3. Interestingly, during WW II, my parents lived in an apartment at 1441 Harvard St, NW, Washington, DC. In 2005, my Mom & I drove by the apartment building and there was no building like Patricia Neal's boarding house on Harvard St.

  4. Used to pass the house on 16th street all the time as a kid. Recognized it in the movie as well. But today is the first time I recognized the address in the movie. Cool!
