Cross and his protégé Jean Laurier’s (Alain Delon) safe house – 39 Rue Jean-Baptiste-Pigalle, Paris, France.

Sarah's (Joanne Linville) house in DC – 4641 Garfield Street NW, Washington, DC.

The CIA stakeout – 4636 Hawthorne Lane NW, Washington, DC.

Cross driving out – W. Glebe Road at Russell Road, Alexandria, Virginia.

Cross going into a Safeway store – 221 W. Glebe Road, Alexandria, Virginia. It’s no longer a Safeway but the building still stands.

The car chase in a narrow passage – 1006 F Street NW, Washington, DC.

The Greyhound bus terminal – 1100 New York Avenue NW, Washington, DC. An office building was erected on the spot of the former bus depot but they preserved the art deco facade at the north entrance.

Laurier embarrasses the CIA agent who's been following him – Watergate Hotel, 2650 Virginia Avenue NW, Washington, DC. The hotel is currently undergoing an extensive renovation.

The CIA Headquarters – Langley, Virginia. Burt Lancaster used his influence with Democratic Senator John V. Tunney to obtain permission to film at the real headquarters. CIA director Richard Helms approved the clearance of Winner and his crew, for whom he issued CIA identity badges that looked almost like the real thing.

Laurier on a date with Susan – Georgetown University, Washington, DC

The CIA detains Zemetkin (Vladek Sheybal) – Dulles International Airport, Dulles, Virginia

Cross arrives in Vienna – Schreyvogelgasse, Vienna, Austria. This is an obvious nod to The Third Man since he's standing almost on the same spot where Holly Martins was looking for Harry Lime.

Cross getting into a car – Schreyvogelgasse 8, Vienna, Austria. They pass in front of the doorway where Harry Lime made his famous appearance in The Third Man. As the car drives away, they turn into Mölker Steig.

Cross is waiting for his next ride, and then a pickup truck appears – Domgasse at Blutgasse, Vienna, Austria. The house on the left in the second picture is the famous Mozart House. Many thanks to Lois for finding this location.

The pickup truck takes Cross to Zharkov’s (Paul Scofield) safehouse – Sankt-Ulrichs-Platz, Vienna, Austria.

Cross meeting with Max (Shmuel Rodensky) – Papagenogasse 4, Vienna, Austria. They're standing at the back of the Hotel Beethoven, and the distinct yellow building at the end of the street the Theater an der Wien.

The Soviet embassy – Jaurèsgasse 1, Vienna, Austria. The church across the street is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas. The real Russian embassy is located to the left of the cathedral.

Laurier tries to trap Cross in a greenhouse – Palmenhaus, Schönbrunn, Vienna, Austria.

The American embassy – Strudlhofgasse 19, Vienna, Austria. The real American embassy is located just around the corner at Boltzmanngasse 16.

Zharkov feeding pigeons – Graben, Vienna, Austria. The monument in front of him is the Pestsäule (Plague Column), erected to commemorate the end of the Great Plague epidemic in 1679.

Zharkov traps an agent in an elevator – Praterstraße 1-7, Vienna, Austria. The building has since been demolished.

Max's apartment – Raimundhof, Vienna, Austria. The door he enters is now a café, and the yard has been transformed into a shopping passage.

Cross running away from his pursuers – Friedrichstraße at Niebelungengasse, Vienna, Austria.

Cross entering the northwest corner of Karlsplatz, and a shootout ensues on the construction site of the Karlsplatz U-bahn station. Due to some misunderstanding, the chase and shootout went beyond the designated area, resulting in real cars honking and real pedestrians screaming at the actors. The scene ended up being more realistic than intended.

  1. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much for doing all this work. I saw this movie as a teenager and loved it. I have looked for so long for many of the places, finally just last year finding the places in Georgetown while on a school trip with students. I've been trying to find the location of the cat adoption using the Howard Johnson sign as a help and the location of the apartment of Jacques' sister and girlfriend by using the name the door, "The Ca..." No hints for the garage at the end, other than I think "CAA" parking. Thank you again.
