Family Plot (1976)

dir. Alfred Hitchcock

Hitchcock's final film is set in an unnamed city, an odd combination of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Someone humorously labeled it "San Frangeles."

The Rainbird mansion - 10451 Bellagio Road, Los Angeles, California. The old Tudor-style mansion was razed some time after 2011, and replaced with a new house (but you can still see the original gated entrance on an old Google Street View.) One source claims that the interior was filmed at a South Pasadena mansion.

Built in in 1929, this Art Deco gem was designated a Los Angeles Cultural Monument in 1969 and was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Southwestern Law School has occupied the building since 1995, following the store's closure.

  1. Love your posts! I've been consumed with them the entire day.

Say... how about locations/ then & now for 1975's 'Shampoo' (Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn), or 1972's 'What's Up Doc' (Babs Streisand, Ryan O'Neill)... and/ or 1979's '10' (Dudley Moore, Bo Derek, Julie Andrews).. Woody Allen's 'Sleeper'.

    Don't get me started!

    1. Maybe next time when I'm visiting Los Angeles or San Francisco.

  2. Growing up between Chicago and California, we were out every weekend sitting on laps in the family car to ride around the various film sights in So Cal and as an adult I've walked he streets of San Francisco where my Grandparents and the first born month old girl, my mother, were caught in the hotel next to the park when the QUAKE hit and all ran to the Park to live there for weeks. I stayed at the Fairmont Hotel with my nine-year-old and dined in Chinatown. God Bless the Old Movie Studios who brought these wonderful scenes to us to spur our imaginations...new producers will be doing the same.
