It's consistent with the later episode when Scottie drives Midge home and we get a glimpse of the building at 296 Union Street. The house has been torn down and replaced with a new four-story building.

The redwood cross-section scene – although such a cross section actually exists in Big Basin, the sequence was shot on a studio set

Beautiful photos.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much.
To be perfectly accurate—the entrance to Elster's shipyard was not a set, it was the entrance to the paint department at Paramount Studios, with a little signage added to disguise it.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the correction.
DeleteWhat a fantastic work you have done with this blog. I started looking for the Jefferson Memorial and how it looked now and then (I saw "Strangers on a Train" yesterday), and I just can´t stop looking at this all. Thank you very much.
ReplyDeletejust watched vertigo on the tube, as a lifelong fan of the city and movies, I really enjoyed your work. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Vertigo is one of my personal favorites and my love for the city started with it.
DeleteGreat images-- then and now. San Francisco is an amazing city. Love your posts-- so interesting and thorough.
ReplyDeleteWere the Brocklebank Apartments (1000 Mason Street) used in the 1984 film, 'The Woman In Red' (Gene Wilder/ Kelly LeBrock) ..? The scenes where Teddy was hiding from Charlotte's husband, perched on the ledge-- where passers-by presumed he was about to jump..?

DeleteYes. They were also used in Impact (1949)
Awesome work. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for doing this!
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome
DeleteThank you! Your blog is awesome, and it inspires very much :)
ReplyDeleteI recently went to see 900 Lombard Street and, as you say, Scottie's entrance now has a big wall around it. Apparently the current owners, who have been there for a number of years, got sick of people taking selfies, standing on the step and even ringing the bell. But you can still appreciate the view from outsides #900.
ReplyDeleteHad never stuck me until I saw this very steep hill how ironic is was Scottie with his vertigo living there !
Many thanks for all these great photos !
