The Great Gatsby (1974)

dir. Jack Clayton

Nick (Sam Waterston) going across the bay to visit his cousin Daisy Buchanan (Mia Farrow) – Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island stands in for the body of water separating the fictional Long Island peninsulas, East and West Egg (Great Neck and Port Washington peninsulas in real life.)

Nick is greeted by Tom Buchanan (Bruce Dern) – Hammersmith Farm, 225 Harrison Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island. The mansion in the background was just a false front, and the camera carefully kept it out of focus. The estate was at one time owned by the Auchinclosses, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s mother and stepfather. The mansion also served as the site of John F. Kennedy’s 1953 wedding reception and as the summer White House from 1961 to 1963.

Hammersmith Farm also provided the dock with the flashing green light that Gatsby is so obsessed with.

The Buchanans' mansion exterior – Heatherden Hall, Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom. It’s located in Pinewood Studios where most of the mansion interiors were also filmed.

"Valley of Ashes" and Wilson’s Garage – these were sets built on a Pinewood Studios backlot.

Tom’s mistress Myrtle (Karen Black) wants to buy a puppy – 1st Avenue at East 59th Street, New York, New York

The New York apartment that Tom keeps for Myrtle – 125 Riverside Drive, New York, New York.

Jake Gatsby’s (Robert Redford) mansion – Rosecliff, 548 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island. Architect Standford White modeled it after Louis XIV's Grand Trianon at Versailles. The estate was originally built for Nevada silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs. It is now owned by the Newport Preservation Society, and is open to the public. Unfortunately, it's not allowed to take pictures inside the mansion.

The oceanfront part of the estate doesn’t have an arch. It was put up there for the filming.

Nick's cottage was constructed on the grounds of Rosecliff. Trees and shrubs were removed from between the cottage and the mansion so that Nick would be able to see Gatsby's parties from his porch.

Nick talking with Jordan (Lois Chiles) – 100 Broadway, New York, New York

Trinity Churchyard, 74 Trinity Place, New York, New York

The flashback of Gatsby and Daisy’s first romantic encounter – Linden Place, 500 Hope Street, Bristol, Rhode Island.

Gatsby, Daisy, Tom, Jordan and Nick coming to the Plaza Hotel – 768 5th Avenue, New York, New York
