Sudden Impact (1983)

dir. Clint Eastwood

Jennifer Spencer (Sondra Locke) kills the first man – Eastern Coastal Trail Overlook, 2586 El Camino Del Mar, San Francisco, California

Inspector Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) coming to a trial – San Francisco City Hall, 1 Dr Carlton B. Goodlett Place, San Francisco, California. Curiously, this establishing shot was borrowed from Dirty Harry with the same cars, same people and the same blooming tree in the foreground.

Callahan stops a robbery in progress and utters the immortal "Go ahead, make day" line – 701 3rd Street, San Francisco, California. The café is now a McDonald's.

Callahan threatens Threlkis (Michael V. Gazzo) at his granddaughter's wedding party – 999 California Street, San Francisco, California. The interior was filmed at the Cocoanut Grove Ballroom, 400 Beach Street, Santa Cruz, California.

The gallery where Jennifer exhibits her disturbing paintings – Franklin Bowles Galleries, 765/799 Beach Street, San Francisco, California.

Jennifer visits her sister in a mental hospital – 649 Frederick Street, Santa Cruz, California. It’s now Dominican Rehabilitation Services.

Callahan’s shootout with the mobsters – Ferry Plaza, San Francisco, California

Callahan practices shooting with his .44 Automag handgun – DeLaveaga Park, 850 Branciforte Drive, Santa Cruz, California

Jennifer coming to ‘San Paulo’ – Lighthouse Field State Beach, W. Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, California

Jennifer’s house – 1307 W. Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, California

Jennifer walking with a curator from the local Historical Society – Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Santa Cruz, California

The carousel that Jennifer is commissioned to renovate – Looff Carousel, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, Santa Cruz, California. The carousel dates back to 1911 and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

Jennifer’s flashback of what happened to her and her sister 10 years ago – Santa Cruz Main Beach, Santa Cruz, California.

The punks’ car ends up falling off the pier into the water – Piers 38-40, San Francisco, California

Having arrived in ‘San Paulo’, Callahan sees a bank robbery in progress – Soquel Avenue at Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz, California. Downtown Santa Cruz was seriously damaged by 1989's Loma Prieta earthquake. The red corner building was one of those impacted, and it has since been replaced by a new one. However, some parts of Soquel Avenue from the bank robbery sequence are still recognizable: the former Bank of America building on the left (though obscured by trees) and the two buildings at the end of the street where it joins Pacific Avenue.

The robber escapes into the tunnel – 1330 Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz, California.

Callahan chases the robber through the tunnel – Front Street Tunnel, Santa Cruz, California.

The robber emerges from the other end of the tunnel – 701 Front Street, Santa Cruz, California.

Callahan "borrows" a bus full of senior citizens to chase the robber – 703 Front Street, Santa Cruz, California.

The chase ends up with the robber crashing on his motorcycle and Callahan arresting him – Pacific Avenue at Walnut, Santa Cruz, California.

Callahan’s motel – La Bahia, 215 Beach Street, Santa Cruz, California. The rundown historic landmark lived on a borrowed time for many years. In 2014, the Santa Cruz City Council approved the plan for transforming it into an upscale hotel presiding over Main Beach.

Callahan runs into Jennifer and his dog causes her to fall off her bike – Seabright State Beach, Santa Cruz, California.

Jennifer follows Kruger (Jack Thibeau) – Municipal Wharf, Santa Cruz, California

Jennifer kills Kruger on the beach – Natural Bridges State Beach, 2531 W Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, California.

Callahan meets with Jennifer at a cafe – The Cooper House, 110 Cooper Street, Santa Cruz, California. The original house, constructed in 1894-1895, was irreparably damaged by the Loma Prieta earthquake and was subsequently demolished. The new Cooper House has replaced the original building.

Jennifer kills Tyrone (Wendell Wellman) – 1509 E. Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, California. Many thanks to Nonuv Urbeeznus for this information.

Ray Parkins’ (Audrie Neenan) house – Still searching for this location

Police Chief Jannings’ (Pat Hingle) house – 407 Cliff Street, Santa Cruz, California. It's now Cliff Crest Bed and Breakfast Inn.

Callahan appears on the boardwalk – Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, 400 Beach Street, Santa Cruz, California

The roller-coaster climax – Giant Dipper, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, 400 Beach Street, Santa Cruz, California. The roller coaster, named a National Historic Landmark, was miraculously untouched by the Loma Prieta earthquake. It resumed its operations one month after the disaster.

  1. Jennifer kills Tyrone location. The house is located at the corner of E. Cliff and Mott. It's right across the street from Sea-bright beach. It has been painted since the movie was made. I went to that beach for years (back in the 80's) and recognized the house immediately when I saw it in the movie.

    1. Thank you very much. It's one of those locations that could only be identified by a local.

  2. After arriving in "San Paulo", Calahan got into a brawl with Ray Parkins, in a "scuzzy" bar. The bar was actually "Positively Front Street", located near the Santa Cruz pier, around the corner from the La Bahia Hotel. The bar building has since been demolished.

  3. Thank you. I am looking for Clint signing autographing a photo at 104 Mott Str for the owner Dick Marshall (who I use to clean house for Rent A Wife domestic services 1983-2017) Dick hung the autographed picture above his mantel, he spoke of it fondly, as a fellow Republican......

  4. Positively Front Street was once a wonderful barstool LOCAL treat. Had a few brews there myself. La Bahia HOPE the owners are able to hang on and get the financial support they need to save this historical landmark.
