One on Top of the Other (1969)

aka Perversion Story
Italian title: Una sull'altra
dir. Lucio Fulci

The Dumurrier clinic – The Lodge at Pebble Beach, 1700 17-Mile Drive, Pebble Beach, California. Many thanks to CashmereLibrarian for her help.

George Dumurrier (Jean Sorel) visiting his mistress Jane (Elsa Martinelli) – Lombard Street just east of Hyde Street, San Francisco, California. This section of Lombard was dubbed "the crookedest street in the world." The other San Francisco competitor for this title, Vermont Street between 20th and 22nd, is steeper than Lombard but has fewer turns.

George and Jane driving on the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California. Topographically, it doesn’t make sense because if Jane lives on Lombard, there’s no need to cross the bridge to get to the Southern Pacific Station.

George drops Jane off at the railway station – Southern Pacific Station, 3rd Street at Townsend, San Francisco, California. The splendid Mission Revival-style station was demolished in the 1970s as the railroad was getting out of the passenger service business. Incidentally, it stood right across the street from the burger joint where Clint Eastwood uttered the famous "Go ahead, make my day" line in Sudden Impact. However, by the time Eastwood’s film was made, the station site had already been an empty lot.

George stops by a gas station to ask for directions to San Luis Obispo – 1177 California Street, San Francisco, California. The gas station, also seen briefly in Bullitt, is no longer there.

George meeting Jane at the railway station (supposed to be in San Luis Obispo) – Southern Pacific Railroad station, 280 North Center Street, Reno, Nevada.

George’s house – Lamoreaux Mansion, Oak Knoll Ranch, 2200 W. Oak Knoll Avenue, Napa, California.

An insurance investigator sees George calling from a restaurant – Fishermen’s Grotto, 2847 Taylor Street, San Francisco, California.

George exits a parking garage – 425 Broadway, San Francisco, California. The original structure has since been demolished though there’s still a parking lot in its place.

George sees Monica Weston (Marisa Mell) performing at a night club – Varni's Roaring 20s, 807 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, California. The building still stands but it’s barely recognizable, stripped of its glorious stained-glass windows. The club also appeared in Experiment in Terror and Machine Gun McCain, and is not to be confused with the current Roaring 20s at 552 Broadway that appeared in Dirty Harry.

George calling Monica from a pay phone – Hyde Street at Beach Street, San Francisco, California

George going to his car – Beach Street at Hyde, San Francisco, California

The insurance investigator follows George’s car – Hyde Street, San Francisco, California

George picking up Monica – Marina Green Drive, San Francisco, California.

The insurance company – 201 Sansome Street, San Francisco, California

The police station – 315 Maple Avenue, South San Francisco, California. It used to be a police station but now it's part of the City Hall complex.

The photo shoot – Japanese Tea Garden, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California

Jane questioning Larry (Jean Sobieski) about the model he once used – Conservatory of Flowers, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California

Larry calling Monica from a pay phone – Embarcadero at Taylor Street, San Francisco, California

George is arrested at Jane’s house – 1081 Lombard Street, San Francisco, California

George is put in prison – San Quentin State Prison, San Quentin, California. The filmmakers were even allowed to film in the prison's gas chamber.

Monica going to retrieve her package from a locker – U.S. Post Office, Franklin D. Roosevelt Station, 909 3rd Avenue, New York, New York.

Monica leaving New York – John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, New York.

A reporter interviews the District Attorney after his meeting with the Governor – California State Capitol, 1315 10th Street, Sacramento, California.

Henry Dumurrier (Alberto De Mendoza) arrives in Paris – Orly Airport, Orly, France.

Henry meeting with Monica in Paris – Vagenende, 142 Boulevard Saint-Germain, Paris, France. It's the same restaurant where Michael Caine meets with Delphine Seyrig in The Black Windmill.

  1. I'm thinking that the first shots are the Inn at Pebble Beach?

    1. Thank you. Do you mean the Inn at Spanish Bay?

    4. We were recently in San Francisco and had fun walking the Dark Passages streets from your post! It was the first time we'd been back to Northern California in many years; in the late nineties we lived very close to Pebble Beach, and that's how I had an inkling about the clinic location. Love your blog; glad I could help!

    5. Thank you, I'm always pleased to hear that people actually use my blog for travel purposes. And thanks again for you help. Pebble Beach is so far away from the other locations in the film, it was hard to guess. I was looking at places closer to the city but none of them matched.
