Last Tango in Paris (1972)

dir. Bernardo Bertolucci

Paul (Marlon Brando) and Jeanne’s (Maria Schneider) first encounter – Pont de Bir-Hakeim, Paris, France.

The empty apartment where they meet – 1 Rue de l’Alboni, Paris, France.

The bar where Jeanne makes her phone calls – Kennedy Eiffel, 16 Avenue du Président Kennedy, Paris, France.

Jeanne meets her fiancé Thomas (Jean-Pierre Léaud) at the railway station – Gare Saint-Lazare, Rue Saint-Lazare, Paris, France.

The first film shoot – 11 Rue de Bagneux, Châtillon, 92320 France. It’s now the Maison des Arts de Châtillon.

Thomas sees Jeanne at the station – Bir-Hakeim Metro station, Boulevard de Grenelle, Paris, France.

The second film shoot – Canal Saint-Martin at Pont de la Grange aux Belles, Paris, France

The film shoot in the rain – Rue de Cossonerie, Paris, France. The building seen at the end of the street is the old Les Halles market that was demolished in the early 1970s and replaced with an underground modern shopping complex, the Forum des Halles.

Paul refuses to let a prostitute and her client into his hotel – 1 Rue de Budapest, Paris, France.

Paul follows the prostitute’s client – Rue du Départ, Paris, France. The construction site on the right is the future Galeries Lafayette store.

Paul confronts the reluctant client – Passage d’Odessa off Rue du Départ, Paris, France. The passage doesn’t exist anymore.

Paul and Jeanne disrupt the tango competition – Salle Wagram, 39 Avenue de Wagram, Paris, France.

Paul chases Jeanne – Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Paris, France.

The chase continues – Place Henry de Montherlant, Paris, France.

Paul arguing with Jeanne – Musée d'Orsay, 1 Rue de la Légion d'Honneur, Paris, France.

Paul continues chasing Jeanne – Rue Bréa at Rue Vavin, Paris, France. Topographically, the foot chase doesn’t make much sense since the Champs-Élysées, Musée d'Orsay and Montparnasse are miles apart.

Jeanne’s apartment building – 26 Rue Vavin, Paris, France.

  1. Rue du Départ, the construction site is the future Galeries Lafayette, but also the Tour Montparnasse, which is the second highest parisian building after the Eiffel Tower. The Montparnasse train station area was totally destroyed and rebuilt in the late 60's / early seventies.

  2. I too while in Paris, have researched Last Tango locations. I agree with most and really appreciate you posting this. The only one that throws me is Paul and Rose's hotel- 1 Rue de Budapest. I could have sworn it was shot on rue Odessa at what is now the hotel Celtic 15 Rue d'Odessa, 75014 . Not arguing or contesting, you are probably right. My question is, how did you find out or what was your source for the rue Budapest location? Please let me know if possible, as I love Paris and am always curious about its locations and history.

I am also looking for as much information / pictures I can find concerning the now-gone Passage d'Odessa where La Boheme was.

Thank you for your efforts and your time.
    Sincerely,

    1. Thank you for the kind words, Dave. Look at the buildings across the rue Budapest. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ha1IlKH29ME/WFlD7jQXz_I/AAAAAAAARvQ/2P3Sv1Ev8FUzuenHt06XyTeRyg2UekBwQCLcB/s1600/RueBudapest2_Now.jpg

  3. Hi, What about the interior of the apartment, is it the same place or somewhere else?

  5. Very interesting information and photographs, but I am wondering....the exterior of the apartment building has a sign that says Rue Jules Verne. Am I right in thinking that the exterior shot is not the building where the apartment scenes were shot? They were clearly shot in different locations.

    1. It's a fake street sign that was put up there to correspond to the address given in the film. It's actually Rue de l'Alboni.

  6. Wish I had had this long ago. The first time I went to Paris I wasted a lot of time searching out 1 Rue Jules Verne on the east side, when I was really looking for 1 Rue de l’Alboni in Passy. Thanks.

  7. I too went to Paris on my first visit searching out Last Tango locations found most fairly quickly and was thrown just like you by the address (Rue Jules Verne) and only years later did I discover by the most delightful experience of serendipity in my life the actual RJV in BELLEVILLE which proved the cinema trickery used maybe because it sounded more French? I don't know but it was the most satisfying revelation when it hit me. Thank you for your channel and work I dig your spirit and all like minded people. It was more serendipity that I found your channel while reading a New Yorker article about Francis Bacon I decided to put in Francis Bacon/Last Tango In Paris having never forgotten his images @ the beginning of the film and alas I found you. Thank you again

  8. Returning again: Great website.
You are one in the few who includes the long-gone location Passage du Départ (also called Passage d'Odessa) where Paul assaults the prostitute's potential customer. The movie still shot you have here showing the club La Boheme (RIP) is classic.
You may or may not be surprised at how many lazy "film locations" sites don't even mention it, much less find it. I used to spend much time in Montparnasse around rue Odessa and rue du Depart, but of course the passage is long gone, replaced by a "modern" building at 16 rue Odessa and then another one at 21 Rue du Départ, 75014 where in the film the customer enters the passage with Brando in pursuit.
Thanks so much again for your research and photos. All the best.
